Helpful Toilet Training Tips From Real Mums
It is always a lot easier to toilet train a child when they are ready. If you choose to start too early, your child may not have the necessary skills to achieve this milestone. Most children between the age of 20 to 30 months are ready to be toilet trained. By this stage, most children have developed the necessary language and physical skills to be successfully toilet trained.
Some helpful hints from real mums:
- Mini M&Ms or other small treat works wonders! If you promise each time you child goes potty, they'll get two or three M&Ms, this will make a huge difference. Beware, Daddy and the older siblings might also want a reward.
- Daycare wonders! Follow the leader. Kids copy other kids, and if they see other children going potty, they'll want to do the same too. Talk to your daycare teachers, and ask them to reinforce the potty training that you're doing at home.
- If you have a son, it may be difficult for him to learn to stand up, so why not try a game. Put a few Cheerios or Coco-Pops in the potty and ask him to take aim. Every time he hits the spot, give him a prize. Try your nearest $2 Shop for goodies your little boy will love.
- The 30 minute timer. Set aside a weekend or a day during the week just for toilet training. Set the timer on your stove to go off every 30 minutes. When it does, make a big deal out of going to the potty. Results will follow.
- Lots of love, praise and attention. Make a big deal about the little steps taken towards potty training.
- Stickers, stickers, stickers! Go to your nearest $2 Shop and buy a selection of stickers. Encourage your child to go potty and for every successful attempt, they get a sticker.
Most of all, choose a technique that compliments and is consistent with your parenting style.
